The office of the Court of Appeal and Prosecutor General have received substantial support in the area of information technology to support improved case management activities in the court. Through the assistance the court hopes to improve transparency, improve judgment writing skill of judges, quicken the time it takes to hear cases and deliver judgments and improve the communication between the Prosecutor Generals Offices and the court.

The CCJAP support provided includes:-

  •  Supply of a photocopy machine to assist the preparation of files and improve communication in both the office of the Prosecutor General and the Court of Appeal.
  • Prosecutors, Judges and senior court officials supplied with desktop computers that are linked with a local area network. Judges prosecutors and staff were trained in the use of Microsoft Word and Excel in order to make best use of the computers. This system greatly increases communication between prosecutors, judges and court staff which in turn should improve both the quality of work in the office of the court and prosecutor and ultimately improve in the timeliness of disposing of cases in the court.
  •  A database / case management system for the court and prosecutors office has been developed. This system will initially improve the listing of cases in the court as well as provide reliable court performance data for the court and MOI. The system is cable of being expanded to a full case management system after the initial system is fully operational.
  •  Electronic court recording has been installed in the court (as well as the Supreme Court). The system will allow for an accurate record of the court trial. An accurate record of the trial will improve ability of the judge to review evidence made during a trial when determining cases as well as writing up a judgment arising from a trial. The court recording system will be supported by a judgment writing course to be conducted in February 2009. The combination of the course and well as the recording system should provide judges with the tools required to greatly improve their skills relating to the writing of court judgments.
