A ten day training program on Emergency Training and Minor Surgery commenced on Monday Morning 11 August 2008 at Prey Sar Training School and sponsored by CCJAP III. The opening was presided over by HE Samkol Sakhan, Deputy Director General-General Department of Prisons; Ms. Cheryl Clay, Corrections Adviser of CCJAP III; and Dr. Eam Sophal, Vice Rector of Phnom Penh Technical School for Medical Care.
Attending this training are a total of 50 trainees including 17 female who are the prison health staff from prisons across Cambodia. The trainers are medical doctors from Phnom Penh Technical School for Medical Care. Emergency Training will teach medical students how to attend to serious injury such as bone fractures, heart attacks or poisoning from chemicals. Minor Surgery teaches about dressing skin abscess, suturing for cuts and dressing of wounds.
The primary role of the prison health staff is to effectively respond to inmates requiring immediate treatment and medical emergencies. The objective of providing emergency treatment is to save lives, reduce the likelihood of disability, prevent further serious injury, relieve pain and assist recovery.
During the opening HE Samkol Sakhan encouraged all trainees to pay attention to the training and use the knowledge gained for the maximum benefit for their respective prisons. At the conclusion, HE Samkol Sakhan thanked CCJAP for its assistance so far. Assistance of CCJAP enables the General Department of Prison to continue upgrading the skills of prison health staff.
